Win! Copperwood Mine Grant Cut from Final Michigan Budget
Thanks to all of you for raising your voices, the new Michigan state budget was passed without the fifty-million-dollar grant sought by a Canadian mining company. For a third time in less than two years, state decision-makers listened and recognized that this is a poor investment of taxpayer funds and would pollute a pristine, beloved old growth forest and nearby Lake Superior. Thank you to our partners, Protect the Porkies and Citizens for a Safe & Clean Lake Superior, for their grassroots efforts. However, work remains — send a message to federal officials today asking them to also deny taxpayer funds to this copper sulfide mine.

Keep Up the Pressure: Continue Contacting U.S. Lawmakers to Protect Our Water
The U.S. House of Representatives is planning to vote on a package of anti-clean water bills, also known as the PERMIT Act, sometime this year. It’s critical that your Congressperson hears directly from you to understand why they must voteNO. To learn more about how this bill would threaten clean water protections, watch this video from the National Wildlife Federation (Facebook, Bluesky, Instagram) and then send a personalized message to your elected U.S. Representative.
Freshwater Native Mussels Help Ontario Scientists Study Water Pollution Effects
By researching the tissues of various mussel species and their aquatic ecosystems, a team of scientists from the Canada Centre for Inland Water hope to learn more about the effects of metals, chemicals and other contaminants. Combined with similar research on snails, birds, and fish, the Integrated Chemical Mixtures Project uses these largely stationary sediment dwellers to understand the impacts of contaminant mixtures. Following data collection, the researchers plan on identifying harmful effects observed by various sources of pollution, and, eventually, solutions to protect human health and the environment.
