Urgent Action: Proposed Energy Bill Would Harm the Great Lakes – Call + Email your Senator Today

Oil and gas pipelines like Line 5, the 71-year-old pipeline that runs under the Straits of Mackinac, will likely get a boost from the Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 if it passes. Over the years, Line 5 has spilled 33 times, releasing over 1.1 million gallons of oil polluting lakes and rivers. The permitting reform bill contains significant limitations to judicial review and accelerates the permitting process. If this bill moves forward, it could significantly reduce the ability of the public, community groups, and state authorities to challenge Line 5’s reroutes and operation.

It is important that your senator hears from you. Join the over 600 people who have already reached out to their Great Lakes senator to say NO to this dangerous bill. Please call and email your senator today to urge them to vote NO on the Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024.

One Year Later: The Battle for Canada’s Green Belt Continues

It has been over a year since Ontario’s Premier walked back his plan to cut up the Greenbelt to encourage housing developments – thanks to the dogged efforts of local advocates, including Freshwater Future’s awesome partners. While the scandal sparked audits and ongoing investigations into potential corruption, the Greenbelt’s protected areas remain at risk. For example, legal loopholes have allowed for two major highways to be sited in the Greenbelt. Claire Malcolmson of Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition shared: “The environmental community have continued to spread important information to a widening group of actors like unions, farmers, and citizens to beat back these challenges to this crucial ecosystem”. Freshwater Future continues to support our partners fighting the sprawl agenda that threatens the Greenbelt and farmlands, preserving the ecosystem benefits that help protect our waters.
