A Sea Change for Superior: The Warming of the World’s Largest Lake
Lake Superior holds ten percent of the world’s surface freshwater. While Superior is known for its shockingly cold water (making swimming a thrill), it is one of the fastest-warming lakes in the world. A new documentary “Sea Change for Superior: The Warming of the World’s Largest Lake” discusses the history of this great lake and its watershed, perspectives from Indigenous communities and how the changing climate is affecting the lake. Even in the Midwest, Drought is Impacting Drinking Water
Another climate change impact, drought is having a huge impact on drinking water. Just outside the Great Lakes basin, cities like Osceola, Iowa are seeing their drinking water sources dry up. The local government has asked its 5,500 residents to use bottled water instead of tap water for drinking. West Lake, Osceola’s source of drinking water, has already dropped six and a half feet from its normal level. Even here in the Great Lakes region, we are susceptible to drought.
