New York’s New Climate and Fracking Laws
At the end of last year, New York’s legislature and governor signed two new bills into law – here is what they mean for the Great Lakes. New York is now the second state to enact a Climate Change Superfund Act, which requires fossil fuel companies to fund a total of $3 billion annually toward state climate resiliency efforts. Another bill effectively closes a loophole and completes the state’s ban on fracking. Although New York previously banned hydraulic fracturing or fracking (where a water-based, chemical-laden solution is used to extract natural gas), companies sought to skirt the law by pursuing fracking using carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 Fracking, like all other fracking, poses a risk of groundwater contamination and has now been banned in New York as well. Freshwater Future believes these policy additions will benefit the health of waters in New York.
