Win! Wisconsin Court Sides with Locals Over Polluting Factory Farms
A lawsuit challenging a local ordinance to regulate confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in Eureka, Wisconsin was recently dismissed by a judge. Local communities stated these ordinances are needed because state agencies are not adequately overseeing large factory farms to ensure they meet regulations. This case shows that this industry can’t simply disregard the consent and public health of our communities. Freshwater Future is glad to see this move to uphold local regulations on factory farms, which can pollute and impair our freshwater resources.
Concerns from the North Side of the Great Lakes
The Great Lakes are international waters and the U.S. administration’s focus on deregulation has our Canadian partners concerned. An interview with Gail Krantzberg, a professor at McMaster University, shares an important perspective on how decisions in the U.S. will negatively impact the health of our waters. Dr. Krantzberg shared in the interview, “He (Donald Trump) believes less regulation is better. He believes in reducing regulations on industries like mining, oil exploration, and manufacturing, which often leads to higher discharge of pollutants being released into the environment”.
