Understanding the Political Landscape of the Great Lakes
This year’s elections have changed the political landscapes that water advocates must navigate in our work to protect Great Lakes communities. We have put together the chart below to help visualize control of the eight Great Lakes states starting in 2025. You can also look up your elected officials on our website. (Please note that this will provide you with your current (2024) elected officials until January.)
The Safe Drinking Water Act Turns 50 Years Old: Here is to Another 50!
The Safe Drinking Water Act was signed into law on December 16, 1974, creating enforceable drinking water quality standards for the first time. Fifty years later, and our water is being monitored and protected from over 90 contaminants – like lead, arsenic, and now PFAS. Freshwater Future acts as a watchdog for Safe Drinking Water Act violations and exceedances of lead in drinking water in the Great Lakes region, helping residents stay safe. We stand ready to safeguard critical drinking water protections. We’ll keep you informed on important issues that impact safe drinking water.
