An opinion piece on the dangerous Energy Permitting Reform Act authored by Jill Ryan, Freshwater Future’s Executive Director, was published this week by The Hill. There is still a chance to defeat this harmful legislation that would open up public lands to oil and gas drilling, as well as mining, increasing pollution risk to waterways. Stewarding Nmé (Lake Sturgeon) in the Great Lakes
Lake sturgeon or nmé (pronounced na-meh in Ojibwe) are making a comeback, thanks in part to the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians in Manistee, MI who developed a method for preserving nmé in the region. Because lake sturgeon return to spawn in the river where they were hatched, the Tribe developed streamside rearing facilities to ensure the fish would return, helping to establish natural reproduction. Its success stems from integrating traditional knowledge with innovative science, and creating an easily replicable, cost-effective model now used widely across the Great Lakes.
