Happy Holidays + Happy New Year from Freshwater Future!

On behalf of the Freshwater Future staff and board, we wish you a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. Your support and contributions to our work helped us have a productive year of amazing work around the Great Lakes Region, but there is more work to do. Please consider an End-of-Year donation, as it will greatly help us continue the fight for clean, safe, affordable drinking water and protect our rivers, lakes, and wetlands from pollution.

Proposed Ohio Salmon Farm Would Withdraw 5-Million Gallons of Water Per Day

The Toledo Lucas County Port Authority approved a $400 million bond to support the construction of a genetically engineered salmon farm.  The facility would withdraw 5 million gallons of water a day and discharge to the St. Joseph River, a tributary of the Maumee River. Residents are concerned that the huge withdrawal will negatively impact the drinking water source or aquifer. Fish farms also produce significant amounts of fish waste that could add to the nutrient pollution of Lake Erie.

Noticed Changes in Water Quality? Share Your Observations with the International Joint Commission

Have you noticed water quality in the Great lakes near you?  If so, the International Joint Commission (IJC), a bi-national organization responsible for implementation of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, is interested in learning what you’ve observed. Harmful algal blooms, climate change, toxic pollution, and microplastics are some of the changes and concerns being submitted according to a spokesperson for the IJC. The survey is open until Friday, December 23.
