Win! Release of PFAS Funding is Positive First Step for Impacted Communities
Although $133 million is a relatively small amount of money compared to the scale of PFAS-contaminated drinking water, one impacted community in Wisconsin is celebrating funds for a new municipal water system. Five years after the residents of Campbell discovered their private wells were contaminated by PFAS, they are now one step closer to transitioning off of bottled water. The recently signed state bill includes grant funds for community testing and remediation. It also expands the eligibility of an existing private well grant program, adding renters, schools, and child care facilities. Freshwater Future strongly supports increasing state and federal funding to ensure all Great Lakes residents have access to safe and affordable drinking water.
Canadian Federal Budget Cuts Water Agency Funding
After less than two years of operations, the federal government plans to cut the Canada Water Agency budget by $5 million, impacting its ability to protect and restore freshwater ecosystems. The Agency denies any changes to its Freshwater Action Plan, but 13 full-time employees will be laid off while increasing reliance on technology for administrative needs. At a time when the federal and provincial governments are weakening water protections, these cuts may have a significant impact on the Agency’s ability to collaborate with stakeholders and carry out its action plan.
Take Actions: Together, Our Voices Make a Difference
Support Public Water Systems and Affordability in Pennsylvania
If you live in Pennsylvania, Take Action before the House votes on Monday April 13th and ask your State Representative to support and co-sponsor the Public Water Protection and Fair Utility Transition Act (HB 1964). This bill is an important first step to slow down the private takeover of public water utilities. When water systems are privatized, customers’ water bills significantly increase while the shareholders of these for-profit water systems make huge profits. Use your voice and send a message to your state representative today asking them to support public water systems!
