Show Your Love of Lake Erie on August 8th, 2024 with #WeAreLakeErie
Petoskey, MI – Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by agricultural pollution continue to pose a significant threat to Lake Erie. The 2014 Toledo water crisis, when toxic HABs in Lake Erie contaminated the drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by these blooms.
A decade later, HABs have persisted, jeopardizing the health of Lake Erie and the communities that rely on it. Swimming, fishing, and even drinking water from Lake Erie are at risk.
But there is hope. Public outcry has successfully addressed environmental challenges in the past, and we believe it can happen again for Lake Erie. To raise awareness and inspire action, we encourage everyone to share their love for the lake on social media using the hashtag #WeAreLakeErie on August 8, 2024.
#WeAreLakeErie is a growing online movement celebrating its 8th annual campaign, supported by Freshwater Future Canada and Freshwater Future.
