Last Day to Comment: Protect our Wetlands and Streams

Today, Friday October 9th, is the final day to use your voice and defend our wetlands and streams from further federal rollbacks. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed another regulation that further guts the Clean Water Act and its critical streams and wetlands protections. Without strong wetland protections, we risk losing the many benefits wetlands provide, such as preventing flooding, filtering pollutants from runoff, and habitats for fish and wildlife. Please join Freshwater Future to stand up for our freshwater resources. Public comment closes at 11:59 pm ET this evening, Friday, October 9th, send a personalized comment to the U.S. EPA today!

Share your story and vision for Canada’s Freshwater Security

The Canada Water Agency is developing its first National Water Security Strategy and requesting input from residents. Please share your input with local experiences and knowledge to inform what the strategy should include. In addition to your personal insight, Freshwater Future developed suggestions that broadly reflect long-term freshwater visions and priorities for the Great Lakes. The survey closes in a few weeks on October 25th.  See our full talking points here.

Water Watchers Respond to Renewed Large Water Withdrawal Threat

A new owner of water bottling facilities in Ontario is seeking permits to extract over 500,000 million gallons daily from two wells. Water Watchers, an environmental organization in Ontario, launched a campaign demanding denial of the permits and an extension of the public comment period. The two municipalities, the Town of Erin and the Township of Puslinch, also requested an extension for permit review from the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks. Water Watchers has successfully prevented private water bottling operations in recent years. Freshwater Future supports Water Watchers’ efforts to ensure groundwater remains a public resource.
