Back in March, we let you know about potential massive cuts to Great Lakes programs and funding in the 2017 federal budget. The budget proposed by President Trump would have cut funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative by 100% and shrunk the EPA’s budget by 31%.
When the budget was announced, we were in Washington, DC, urging Congress to protect these vital programs. Because of you, our generous supporters, we were able to continue advocating for full funding of the EPA and the GLRI, and Congress listened. The Omnibus Spending Bill passed in the House just moments ago and scheduled for a vote in the Senate this week rejects the significant cuts proposed by the federal administration and maintains funding for core Great Lakes programs, including:
But our work isn’t done. With the President already tweeting about the need for a “good (government) shutdown” in September, and the same 100% cut to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative being proposed in his 2018 budget, we know we’ll have to keep fighting to maintain the laws and funds that protect our waters and our way of life.
