Monica Lewis-Patrick

Monica wants water affordability, and she wants it now. As the co-founder, President, and CEO of We the People of Detroit, Monica is a tireless and fearless strategist working to ensure that clean water is available and affordable for all people.

We first came to know her in 2016 when Freshwater Future helped Monica and other leaders in Detroit and Flint, Michigan come together to host a symposium on water infrastructure and affordability. She has a singular vision that focuses her energy and those around her on the things that can move this issue forward. From bringing together academics to research the health impacts of water shutoffs, to speaking about the United Nations Resolution that water and sanitation are basic human rights, to creating opportunities for young people to use arts to express their experiences of living without water and living with toxic water, Monica does it all.

Her leadership is deep and wide. Whether she’s helping to ensure that water is available to those who can’t afford to pay their bills or serving on policy committees to develop new options that give everyone access to safe and affordable drinking water, Monica is a passionate advocate and an incredibly effective activist.

Freshwater Future is honored to support her work and thrilled to present her with a Freshwater Hero Award.
