Great Lakes Week: Watch Live Now

Posted on September 10, 2014 by

Great Lakes Week and the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition meeting is going on this week in Grand Rapids, Michigan…and Freshwater Future is there!

Ten years ago, scientists were warning us that the most significant fresh water resource on the planet – our Great Lakes – was on the brink of a complete ecosystem breakdown.  Faced with this threat, Peter Wege and other visionaries gathered in Grand Rapids and provided the funding to start the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition.  This year we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition and Peter Wege’s long and distinguished career of helping restore and protect the Great Lakes.
We are celebrating some of our major victories for the Great Lakes, including our collective work to successfully secure more than 1.6 billion in federal funding to date, to restore habitat for fish and wildlife, clean up toxic pollution and control invasive species, and replace and repair aging sewage infrastructure.  We are also looking at emerging challenges, continued battles and strategies on how to address them.
