Indiana Residents - New Urgent Action to State Representatives

The Indiana State Senate just quickly passed a bill that dismantles the state’s environmental agency in favor of corporate polluters, and the Indiana State House will vote soon on Senate Bill 277. Your support and voice are needed NOW to stop the passage of a bill that puts all Hoosiers’ health at risk, including the safety of residents’ water from source to tap. With this form, send a message to your state representative as soon as possible, and please share this with your fellow residents!

What does this bill propose?

  • Making much of the agency’s environmental protection work optional
  • Eliminating dozens of environmental reporting requirements and weakening permit review processes
  • Deleting key language linking water pollution laws to public health, safety, and welfare
  • Making all current divisions of the Department optional – including the water division
  • Eliminating permits for the use of atomic radiation
  • Consolidating decision-making and power with the head of the agency
  • Banning the ability of the state to make stricter environmental policies than the federal government

Speak out to Protect Waterways from Federal Deregulation

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is now accepting public comments in response to their proposal to limit the ability of states and Tribes to review and veto federal permits under the Clean Water Act, loosening restrictions on corporate polluters. Use Freshwater Future’s form and customize your comment to add your own experience and concerns. Note that the EPA is not likely to consider comments without personalization. Be sure to comment by Tuesday, February 17th.

Here are some additional talking points to get you started:

  • Provide an example of a waterway or wetland that may be placed at risk due to this proposed rule.
  • Changing this part of the Clean Water Act betrays the idea of federal and state cooperation, which is foundational to America’s system of government
  • This limits states’ and Tribes’ opportunities to prioritize their specific needs to protect their water.
  • Weakening Section 401 undermines the will of Americans who want clean water protections
  • Shortening project reviews does not allow states and Tribes adequate time to thoroughly assess projects that may increase pollution

In order to develop policies that address the crisis of residential water service becoming unaffordable for more than one-third of homes in the country, individuals and groups in communities with high water rates came together to create a set of consensus principles. The pledge below is based on the principles that community members wish to see in developing water affordability policies.
