One of the key responsibilities of most boards of directors is to ensure adequate financial resources for the organization. Yet many board members will admit to a FEAR of fundraising. This fear is usually based on the unknown and can be overcome with clear communications about exactly what the board members responsibilities are for fundraising. One of the first steps toward engaging a board in fundraising is to ask for all board members to be donors. Many grant applications request the percentage of board members giving. An organization with 100% of board members giving, shows that the people closest to the organization are committed, supportive, and engaged. Board members do not all have to give the same amount, but should give at a level that matches their ability.
