Take Action
The Great Lakes Compact - Four States Down with Four to Go!
Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana and New York all ratified the Compact - way to go! But we still need the support of the remaining four Great Lakes states. As the demand for water grows in the U.S., it is important that we support this delicately negotiated initiative to protect and conserve our greatest resource. Last-minute efforts to modify and derail this plan by a few misinformed legislators place the future of our region at risk. The time for hesitation is behind us. The time for responsible leadership and action is now. Below is a listing of where the Compact stands in the remaining four states.
- Wisconsin: The Compact passed the Senate and is awaiting action from the Assembly. Contact Melissa Malott from Clean Wisconsin to find out how you can get involved at: (608) 251-7020 x 13 or mmalott@cleanwisconsin.org.
- Ohio: The Compact passed the House and is awaiting action from the Senate. Contact Kristy Meyer from Ohio Environmental Council to find out how you can get involved at: (614) 487-7506 or kmeyer@theOEC.org.
- Michigan: A bipartisan coalition of more than two-thirds of the Senate and 40-members of the House are co-sponsoring legislation to implement the Compact. Committees in both Chambers have voted their approval. To find out how to get involved, contact Grenetta Thomassey (231) 347-1181 or grenetta@watershedcouncil.org.
- Pennsylvania: The Compact has passed the House and is awaiting action by the Senate. To find out how you can get involved, contact Mark Gorman with Pennsylvania Environmental Council at (814) 332-2946 or mgorman@pecpa.org.
