After 7 years of hard battle, the proposal to build an $8 million boat launch on the shore of Lake Superior at McQuade Road was officially buried by the Duluth City Council at the July 24th meeting. The controversial development has been long contested by environmentalists and residents of the McQuade Road area due to concerns that the project (proposed to take place on a beautiful 9 acre Congdon shore land gift to the city of Duluth) would be environmentally harmful, too expensive and unnecessary.
After the long awaited decision was made against the project, Duluth’s Mayor Doty- one of the greatest advocates for this development- said he was disappointed in the decision and still thought the harbor would have been a good idea. Technically, Mayor Doty has the power to ignore the Council vote and grant a temporary 3-year lease, during which time the launch could be built, but it’s doubtful he would partake in such activities.
